Saint Martin's high school opened its doors to a single male student in 1895, with high school and college level classes being intermixed. In the 1930's, classes were separated and Saint Martin's later became Saint Martin's College. It wasn't until the 1960's and after the world wars that SMC opened its doors to female students looking to earn a college education. In 2005, SMC became Saint Martin's University.
It's no secret that the Catholic teachings enforce the ownership resulted in waiting to have sex until marriage, as any prior relations result in sinful behavior and being "dirty" for your husband. In 2018, students are still expected to follow the Catholic teachings and the rule prohibiting sexual relations is clearly outlined in the residence life contract. While students still break the rules, they are much quieter about the affair.

| The February 1971 issue of "The Guardian," Saint Martin's student run newspaper showcased the separation of male and female students, the satirically written piece showcases segregation the private religious school placed on their female students. |
However, in 1971, your opinion was fair game and freely published. With the author "Sheila Eagen" assumingely being female, it was this piece that caught my eye as I combed through the archives deep in the library basement. Eagen used humor to expose the effects of SMC's separation policy between male and female students. Being a current newspaper employee myself, this amused me as I would surely be in the President's office if I were to publish this piece in 2018.
